Regeneration: Broadmarsh
Broadmarsh Shopping Centre
Indigo advises Westfield, one of the world's largest shopping centre developers and operators, on the redevelopment of the Broadmarsh Centre in Nottingham City Centre.
Being such a historic centre, the planning challenges raised by this project were extensive. Surrounding the site are a number of sensitive receptors which required detailed consideration, such as the views of Nottingham Castle (a Scheduled Ancient Monument) and a number of Conservation Areas and Listed Buildings.
Indigo advised on the entire scheme's planning aspects, including project managing and leading all negotiations; managing the Environmental Impact Assessment; preparing the retail assessment; and preparing the planning and conservation area consent applications. There were extensive negotiations on the scheme with English Heritage and CABE, who refer to the evolution of the design as an example of best practice. After gaining outline consent in 2004, Indigo became involved in a Compulsory Purchase Order inquiry to acquire the necessary land. An application to vary various conditions was granted consent in 2006, including increasing the floorspace to 136,000sqm. Work on the detailed design is ongoing.
